A story from London in late summer:

A few of my favourite inspirations from the Matisse Cut Outs Exhibition at the Tate Modern. I love and crave the amazing exhibitions they have in the galleries there.

This exhibition of Matisse cut outs reminded me to be more free and experimental with creative expression and art in life. The cut outs are perfect in their imperfections. The lines are not so straight, the edges a little jagged. Mistakes are made or ideas change in the process and pieces stuck over them. But then such is, as in life. The overall impacts of the work is striking. It’s an important lesson for me in not getting stuck into the minute details in creative work, to create the bigger picture.

It also reminded me to un-conform in my creative and daily life. Matisse at this time worked out of big home studio. There was little separation in some ways between his life and his art. Some of the walls were covered in cut outs as he created. It’s easy to get caught up in a “vogue living” or “instagram” style idea of what my house might look like…however it doesn’t need to at all. It could even be a living working art space if I so desired.

So many lessons can be learnt from the masters.
